The Materials Testing Laboratory:
A full-service metallurgical evaluation laboratory capable of performing
metallography, replication, scanning electron microscopy, energy
dispersive spectroscopy, and hardness and microhardness determinations.
The Materials Testing Laboratory also offers tensile, compression,
corrosion, Charpy impact, fatigue, double and single shear, and
creep and stress rupture testing.
In addition to these services, we also provide metallurgical and
mechanical testing, chemical analysis, failure analysis, reverse
engineering, materials characterization, materials engineering
services, and welding procedure and performance qualifications.
|
| Thielsch Engineering utilizes traceable standards
and calibrations on all equipment for the metallurgical evaluation
of all major engineering alloys. Our engineering staff members
have widely diverse backgrounds in failure analysis, root cause
analysis, heat treating, metal forming and production. The laboratory
also has full-service capabilities for the testing of materials
in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), military
specifications and others. |
| Mechanical Testing: The Mechanical Testing Department is well
equipped to determine the compliance of materials to applicable
standards and specifications. Departmental personnel have extensive
experience with test design and procedures as well as the interpretation
of results. Our fully equipped machine shop allows us to produce
the custom fixtures required for product testing. |
| We have evaluated a wide array of products including
bio-medical implants, air bag safety sensors, cigarette lighters,
piping systems, and structural components. The testing we perform
may be part of a quality assurance program, manufacturing engineering
program, failure analysis or materials research and development.
In-house equipment is used for the following tests:
• Tension Testing, Compression Testing, Hardness and Microhardness Testing
• Impact Testing, Corrosion Testing, Hydrogen Embrittlement Testing
• Bend Testing, Fatigue Testing, Creep and Stress Rupture Testing

Chemical Analytical Testing: The Chemical Analytical Testing
Department performs surface analyses and imaging on a variety of
materials utilizing a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Our SEM
is capable of operating under low vacuum, enabling the analysis
of nonconductive materials with fewer charging effects. The SEM
is equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), which
provides chemical analyses of the field of view or spot analyses
of minute particles. Mapping can also be performed to show the
distribution of elements within an area of interest. The Optical
Emission Spectrometer (OES) is used for quantitative bulk analysis
of most alloys and stainless steels. The lab provides comprehensive
chemical analysis reports for clients |
Metallurgical Testing: Thielsch Engineering has precision
optical microscopy equipment for the metallurgical evaluation of
all major metallic materials. Our Metallographers are accomplished
technicians with extensive experience in the sample preparation
and characterization of metallic materials. Our capabilities include
photography, sample mounting and preparation, metallography at
up to 2000X, and microhardness and thickness measurements. Utilizing
these capabilities, MET Lab produces complete metallurgical evaluations
and reports for clients. |
