Petrography - Hardened Concrete Microscopical Examinations

Petrographic examination provides one of the most rapid, least expensive methods to evaluate concrete quality, diagnose causes of deterioration, and determine extent of damage. It is applicable to aggregates, building stone, concrete, mortar, grout, plaster, stucco, terrazzo, and similar Portland cement mixtures or gypsum plaster.


The Goals:

  • Utilize the procedures set forth in the ASTM C-295 for aggregates, ASTM C-457 for air-void system parameters, ASTM C-1324 for mortar, and ASTM C-856 for concrete.
  • Determine causes of inferior quality, distress or deterioration, and evidence of improper finishing/curing.
  • Identify causes of cracking, evidence of early freezing, evidence of chemical attack, probable future performance, extent of corrosion of reinforcing steel, potentially reactive aggregates, and evidence of harmful alkali aggregate reaction.

Petrographic examination is often supplemented with physical testing, site inspection, and chemical analysis. All methods of evaluation are performed in compliance with project specifications.
Our field work provides assistance to engineers, contractors, testing laboratories, and architects in evaluating possible causes of material distress or inferior product performance.
A critical part of the site visit is the selection of sampling locations. However, if a visit to the site is not practical, we often review electronically transmitted photographs to aid in the sample selection. CTS understands the stress and expense a failure creates. We ensure that samples are as representative as possible so that a timely identification of the problem is afforded.
