Full-Service Environmental Microbiology Testing, Consulting and Research Laboratory Drinking Water Analysis BAL Laboratory provides services to community and noncommunity drinking water programs to assure the safety of potable water systems, including customers testing for total and fecal coliform bacteria. The frequency of these tests is determined by local Department of Health officials. The lab will conduct immediate re-sampling upon request, if necessary, and interfaces directly with the client and the regulatory agencies. Wastewater Analysis BAL provides quality assurance programs for maintaining environmental compliance and safety of facilities. Typical customers include but are not limited to food processing plants, paper mills, plating services and town wastewater treatment facilities. Pollution Assessments The lab develops sampling protocols and ensures regulatory oversight coordination for non-point source pollution. Personnel work with state and federal regulatory agencies providing assistance in monitoring waterways in an effort to identify the type of pollutant as well as the source of pollution. Beach Water Analysis BAL provides an essential service to the health of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut swimmers by routinely sampling and testing of beach water and inspecting for pollution indicator organisms. The lab tests both fresh and salt waters of both state and private beaches. The service includes re-sampling, seven days a week, if needed as well as reporting results to the state. Indoor Air Quality Analysis On-site assessments are conducted for airborne microbes including Stachybotrys mold and Legionella bacteria found wherever airborne microbes are a concern. Processes we evaluate include HAVC, waste water treatment facilities and processing plants. These microbes have been linked to mild sore throats, asthma and general respiratory problems. BAL can determine the existence of toxic molds using state-of-the-art bio-aerosol monitoring equipment, thereby providing the client with rapid and professional analytical results. Clients include schools, health facilities and public buildings. Food Product Analysis Quality assurance of key food groups can have a major impact on the health of the general public. BAL has experience in the analysis of seafood, shellfish, meat, produce and processed foods. Customers include but are not limited to food processors, restaurants, grocery stores and meat packers. BAL can assist with new product development and has experience providing consulting assistance with respect to housekeeping and problem solving. Bio-Corrosion Analysis BAL provides testing of piping, tank failures, sprinkler systems, desalinization processes and eye wash station failures due to Microbiologically Induced Corrosion (MIC). Lab and field studies identify microbial sources of biocorrosion, biofouling and biodeterioration. Test kits are available for client inspections. Microscopy, Environmental and Consulting Services BAL Laboratory has experienced microbiologists available for culture and characterization studies. The lab provides on-site consultation ranging from quality assurance program development to setting up and conducting environmental monitoring projects. Experience includes working with the EPA, state, city and town agencies, the insurance industry, privately owned businesses, schools, sports complexes, hospitals and health facilities, as well as private home owners.
